Public Information Officer
Maria Peterson is the Public Information Officer for the Utah Department of Corrections. She manages media relations, the Department’s social media and websites, community outreach, internal communications, family concerns and serves as the Tribal liaison. Prior to her appointment to this position in October 2016, Peterson spent nine years serving in the Washington state corrections system working to engage and educate the public in various communications roles. She served as a communications consultant, IT consultant, and Internal Communications Manager while in Washington.
Peterson started her career in television news spending five years as a producer, reporter and anchor at television stations in Oregon and Alaska. She left TV for public service in 2005 to work as a Public Relations Coordinator for the City of Anchorage’s animal shelter. In 2007, she began working for Washington State Department of Corrections.
Peterson served for four years on Washington’s Interagency Committee for State Employed Women and was appointed chair of the committee in 2015. She works closely with Executive Director Cook as a member of Utah’s Multicultural Commission.
