In this capacity, he oversees the agency's administrative support functions including the Records Office, GRAMA (public records) requests, State Vehicles (Fleet), department policies and procedures, and offender grievances/disciplinary appeals. Steve also helped establish and now chairs ASCENT - a coalition of Federal, State and Local government, non-profit and private entities seeking to help ease the process of release from incarceration back to the community.
Steve formerly served as the Utah Department of Corrections' Public Information Officer (2009-2014), Communications Director at the Washington State Department of Corrections (2014), and Director of Quality and Process Improvement for Utah Corrections. Prior to joining Corrections, he worked as a journalist at The Salt Lake Tribune and was an intern reporter in the Washington, D.C., Bureau of London's The Daily Telegraph.
Steve attended the University of Utah, where he earned a Master's Degree in Public Administration as well as Bachelor's Degrees in Political Science and Communication, with minors in Middle East Studies and International Studies.
