Substance Abuse

Utah State Prison

There are two Residential Therapeutic Community (TC) Substance Abuse Treatment programs at the Utah State Prison in Draper. The Con-Quest Program is for male offenders, and the Ex-Cell Program is for female offenders. These programs provide a foundation and a support for offenders to deal appropriately with their substance-abuse issues and addictive behaviors. The inmates and counselors use the community as the method of treatment to provide a consistent and reliable format that encourages positive risk taking in order to make personal improvements in all aspects of the inmates' lives.

Con-Quest

Each Con-Quest resident is expected to participate in classes as well as both group and individual therapy offered by Con-Quest staff. Residents are also required to attend orientation, rational thinking, criminal lifestyles, wellness, living with others, lifestyle balance, recovery and maintenance, transition, choice and change, and "Why Try" classes. Generally treatment will last between 12 and 18 months culminating in a graduation ceremony.

Ex-Cell

Ex-Cell residents are expected to participate in classes as well as in group and individual therapy, as offered by Ex-Cell staff. Residents are also required to attend personal change, wellness, communication, living with others, co-dependency, budgeting, criminal lifestyles, cognitive self change, self esteem, relapse prevention, grieving, and "Why Try" classes. Generally treatment will last between six and nine months, ending with a graduation.

Other Treatment Options

Substance abuse educational classes are offered for offenders who are waiting to participate in the Ex-Cell or Con-Quest programs. Other options are available in the HOPE substance-abuse program at the Central Utah Correctional Facility and at county jails.

Central Utah Correctional Facility

HOPE

The HOPE Program at Central Utah Correctional Facility is a highly structured, comprehensive, Residential Substance Abuse Program. It is a principle and values-based Therapeutic Community (TC) housed in several open-dorm sections in the Fir housing complex. The program's design uses a positive peer culture and environment, where high standards, morals of "right living" and healthy values are reinforced with privileges, rewards and recognition.

Other Treatment Options

CUCF offers several additional substance abuse treatment options, including:

  • Drug Abuse on Computers: A comprehensive course on the issues surrounding drug abuse and associated criminal thinking errors. Each class segment includes computerized testing to monitor comprehension and retention.
  • Quitting Meth: This course covers how methamphetamine affects one physically, mentally and morally, and develops a plan and commitment to make recovery a positive experience.
  • Focus on Drugs: The National Institute on Drug Abuse's mission is to bring the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addictions. This course teaches that drug abuse has serious consequences. The most serious consequence is that prolonged drug use changes the brain in function and long-lasting ways.
