Records is a Unit within the Administrative Services Bureau. The Unit is responsible for the appropriate management, storage, and archiving of department records. The staff also have ultimate responsibility for work with the Government Records Access and Management Act, or GRAMA (see the link below). When requests are made for department records, the Records Unit is responsible for determining the status of the requested record within the confines of the GRAMA statute, and then, according to that status, determining whether or not the record can be released.
The Department of Corrections fully supports the ideals of transparency and public access. However, the department is also custodian of a variety of types of records, some of which the GRAMA statute clearly indicates are private or protected and cannot be released. One of the charges of the Records Unit is to balance the ideal of transparancy, while at the same time ensuring the department is following the state's records laws.
