The Facilities Unit is located witin the department's Administrative Services Bureau. The staff within this Unit are responsible for managing the various construction projects within the department, as well as servicing department buildings.
At any given time, the department is engaged in several construction projects. At times, this includes the building of new prison facilities. However, more frequently, these projects involve the upgrade of equipment or renovation of existing space. Funding for these projects is provided through the Division of Facilities and Construction Management, or DFCM, which is housed within the state's Department of Administrative Services. Projects include everything from security upgrades to pavement replacement. The Facilities Unit serves as the on-site monitor of sub-contracted projects. They work to ensure the work is completed as agreed, on time, and within budget. For larger projects, such as the construction of prison facilities, the staff work hand-in-hand with DFCM to provide the technical correctional expertise necessary to build safe, secure, and state-of-the-art facilities. From architectural design to final inspection and operation, Facilities staff provide the coordination needed to see the project through.
Facilities staff are also responsible for the maintenance of many of the department facilities along the Wasatch Front. From Community Correctional Centers to the Department's Administrative Building and Training Academy, these staff ensure all aspects of the buildings are functioning properly and safely.
